Reputation

Reputation. It is something people live and die by. It can make a man and ruin him. In the city of Ilyssa’s Landing reputation can greatly effect a merchant’s ability to make money, or a politician’s ability to make a deal.

When a character gains a point of reputation they make pick a descriptive word or short phrase that describes their reputation. This word could be honorable, reliable, a Rake, or anything similar. When ever the character is making a social roll such as Diplomacy or Intimidation and their reputation would influence the target of the roll the reputation bonus is added. Every time a character gains a new reputation point they can spend it either to buy a new term, or to apply it to a current reputation.

A fighter, gaining his first point of reputation at level 3, places it in Fearsome gaining a +1 bonus. A bonus he can use later when he attempt to Intimidate a bunch of orcs in a dungeon. At 5th level he gains a second point which can be spent to increase Fearsome to +2, but instead buys “Reliable” at +1. Which becomes useful later on a Diplomacy check later when attempting to buy a horse on credit from a stable.
